How is NTT DATA reshaping the Electric Vehicle (EV) charging experience with governments? This article focuses on NTT DATA's contributions to the development of sustainable and efficient mobility solutions in the APAC region, leveraging technologies such as AI. EVs and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are growing in popularity, and so is the charging infrastructure, but they also face challenges.

NTT DATA's NXT Mobility Business Suite is enhancing the EV charging system

A few years ago, customers were primarily concerned about price and driving range when purchasing EVs, but today, they are more focused on charging infrastructure. Although EV adoption is growing rapidly worldwide, the number of charging stations remains insufficient. To keep pace with the rapidly growing EV market, vast networks of publicly accessible chargers will need to be built and put into operation. For the efficient and sustainable management of charging stations, NTT DATA has developed a comprehensive solution called the NXT Mobility Business Suite.

The NXT Mobility Business Suite is a cloud-based suite that offers a comprehensive solution for managing EV charging operations. It combines advanced technologies, data analytics, and AI-driven insights to optimize EV charging, delivering a seamless and efficient experience for both operators and consumers. It consists of the Charging Management System (CMS) and the E-Mobility Data Platform (NXT-EDP).

  • NXT-CMS: A Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform designed for e-mobility service providers and charge point operators (CPOs) to manage EV operations with lower capital and operational expenditures. The core features of NXT-CMS include Smart Charging & Load Balancing, a Mobile Consumer Application, and Roaming Services.
  • NXT-EDP: NXT-EDP is a powerful data platform that captures and analyzes real-time data from charging points to offer valuable insights. It facilitates route optimization, energy distribution, and consumption management, as well as charging point utilization. It is designed to improve the total cost of ownership for operators by leveraging data analytics to predict customer needs and behaviors.

Leverage AI for further value creation

As artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool, NTT DATA's mission is to drive transformation through AI. NTT DATA is leveraging AI in charging infrastructure to provide additional value to clients. Here is an introduction of two NXT-EDP's use cases.

  • Demand Forecasting and Dynamic Pricing Optimization: The objective of this use case is to leverage historical data from EV chargers and implement AI/ML algorithms. By using hyperscale data analytics and AI/ML services, a flexible pricing model can be developed to ensure efficient charger utilization and increased profitability. There are three benefits of dynamic pricing for EV chargers:

    Maximize Revenue: By adjusting prices dynamically based on demand, charge point operators (CPOs) can maximize revenue during peak times and incentivize charging during off-peak hours.

    Optimized Charger Utilization: Dynamic pricing can help distribute charging demand more evenly throughout the day, preventing overloading during peak hours and encouraging usage when demand is lower.

    Improved Customer Satisfaction: Offering lower prices during off-peak times makes charging more affordable, which can attract more users.

  • Predictive Maintenance Powered by AI/ML: The rapid expansion of EVs has fueled the demand for robust and reliable EV charging infrastructure. As EV chargers proliferate, ensuring their availability and performance becomes critical. The objective of this model is to assess the need for preemptive maintenance of EV chargers, aiming to reduce maintenance costs and minimize unexpected downtime.
    When the AI model predicts that a component of the EV charger is likely to fail, the Events Manager can trigger maintenance workflows automatically. This can be integrated with any hyperscale Simple Notification Service (SNS) to send alerts to technicians, initiating proactive repairs before any failure impacts users.

NTT DATA Foresight: How Energy Experience can be transformed

NTT DATA is not only focusing on NXT Mobility Business Suite, but also focusing on Energy Experience itself. While the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is progressing, users have yet to fully benefit from this transition due to risks such as running out of power, perceived high costs, and impacts on electricity supply and demand. NTT DATA contributes to the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) and carbon neutrality through its comprehensive capabilities, ranging from infrastructure development and smart charging to energy management like Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), encompassing business and service design across industries as well as social infrastructure development. Here is one of the NTT DATA's case studies of energy experience.

Research and development for the realization of VPPs leveraging EVs

NTT DATA conducts research and development of technologies such as EV recharge/discharge and electricity supply forecasting, leveraging the latest technology. With the realization of Virtual Power Plants (VPP), governments can benefit from a reduction in CO2 emissions, operators from the effective use of renewable energy, logistics companies from improved efficiency, and EV users from reduced charging time and costs.
